The majority of the expansive mountain areas of the country are to be found in Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland and Dalarna – an area covering almost 7,000,000 ha. Each year we grant permits in the mountain areas for almost a quarter of a million fishing days and around 40,000 hunting days for small game.
Rearing of reindeer
The County Administrative Board also works with matters related to the rearing of reindeer. Within approximately 40 per cent of the country's land area the Sami have the right to rear reindeer. Together with the Sami villages the County Administrative Board works with social planning, setting boundaries for the Sami villages, grazing for reindeer, financial support, making an inventory of predators and registration of reindeer marks.
Mountain management
The County Administrative Board is responsible for the national trails together with bridges, windbreaks and the marking of winter and summer trails. The trails are important for mountain safety and to ensure that visitors do not harm sensitive areas. We also have specially appointed nature conservation rangers whose duties include supervision of mountain reserves and making an inventory of and monitoring large predators.
Our administration duties include issuing permits for the use of government land above the cultivation line for, for example, Sami settlements, ski lodges, mobile outdoor pursuits, masts and power lines. The County Administrative Board also issues hunting and fishing permits.
