Environmental protection

The County Administrative Board monitors and analyses the state of the environment in the county. We also compile know-how and establish regional objectives for the environment.

The County Administrative Board examines and inspects major activities which represent a danger to the environment as laid down in the Environmental Code.

Each municipal authority has a municipal environmental authority which is responsible for the local monitoring of environmentally hazardous operations as laid down in the Environmental Code. The County Administrative Board provides advice in the work of the municipal environmental authorities and follows up and evaluates their work.

Examples of environmentally hazardous operations include:

  • surface treatment
  • foundries
  • paper mills
  • energy facilities
  • sawmills
  • rubber plants
  • waste disposal facilities
  • sewage works
  • extraction operations i.e. exploitation of a raw material.

The County Administrative Board works on an overall level with health protection issues in the county and also has a co-ordinating role. This means that we assess the consequences that a particular activity or measure will have from a health protection point of view. When we make assessments we take into account noise, vibrations, shock waves in the air, radiation, smells, legionella and radon.
